Overview
MRSA screens detect colonization with methicillin-resistant S. aureus using selective chromogenic culture and/or NAAT from surveillance swabs.

Specimen Requirements
- Specimen: swab of the indicated site collected with validated technique
- Transport: place immediately into appropriate transport medium (e.g., Amies) unless a dry-swab molecular collection kit is specified
- Handling: transport at the temperature and time limits validated for culture or antigen/NAAT
- Site: label anatomic site clearly; interpretation depends on expected flora
- Anterior nares are the most common site; follow institutional multi-site protocols when used
Analytical Method
Chromogenic MRSA agars select cefoxitin/oxacillin-resistant staphylococci with colored colonies. NAAT detects mecA/mecC targets with rapid turnaround. Positive screens indicate colonization, not necessarily infection.
