Specimen Requirements

  • Specimen: site-appropriate clinical material collected aseptically per institutional protocol

  • Labeling: two patient identifiers, collection time/date, and anatomic site
  • Stability: organism viability and antigen/nucleic acid stability are method-specific; do not exceed local time limits
  • Prefer aspirate or tissue over superficial swab when feasible
  • If anaerobes are sought, use anaerobic transport systems and avoid dry swabs

Analytical Method

Specimens are Gram-stained and plated to aerobic media ± anaerobic media. Isolates are identified and susceptibility-tested based on organism and clinical significance policies.

Interpretation depends on specimen quality and organism. Surface swab 'mixed skin flora' often has limited clinical value compared with deep isolates.
