This lesson focuses on neutrophil interpretation at the bench: reading instrument output, verifying flags on the peripheral smear, and reporting a coherent hematologic pattern. Pattern labels describe recognized laboratory findings; they are not substitutes for clinical diagnosis.

Each objective describes a report-interpretation competency rather than rote cell definition.

  • Identify neutrophil-related parameters on a complete blood count (CBC) with differential: white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil percentage, band forms, and absolute neutrophil count (ANC)
  • Interpret automated instrument flags for left shift and immature granulocytes (IG) and determine when peripheral blood smear review is required
  • Correlate automated differential results with Wright-Giemsa peripheral smear morphology prior to result verification
  • Classify neutropenia severity by ANC and apply institutional critical-value notification criteria
