Section: Learning Objectives
This lesson addresses basophil interpretation on the CBC with differential and peripheral smear, morphology, absolute counts, and pattern framing.
Each objective describes a bench competency for result verification and reportable pattern synthesis.
- Identify basophils on Wright-Giemsa smear by metachromatic granules obscuring the nucleus
- Calculate absolute basophil count when basophilia is present
- Correlate basophilia with allergic inflammation and myeloproliferative patterns, with cautious language
- Distinguish basophils from eosinophils and neutrophils on morphology
- Report basophil findings without overcalling myeloproliferative neoplasm from rare basophilia alone
