Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective below describes a transfusion-service laboratory competency, investigating and interpreting adverse transfusion reactions, not delivering bedside treatment.
- Describe the elements a complete transfusion-reaction report must contain, and distinguish laboratory-documented findings from clinically assigned diagnostic classifications
- Apply standard hemovigilance reaction-category coding to a completed workup, recognizing when a reaction can be definitively classified versus when it must be reported as indeterminate/probable pending further information
- Explain the laboratory's product-disposition and record-retention responsibilities for units, tubing, and residual specimens involved in a reported reaction
