Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective describes a bench interpretation competency, not isolated memorization of organism lists or stain colors.
- Explain why mycolic-acid–rich walls retain carbol fuchsin or fluorochrome after acid-alcohol decolorization and how that property enters an identification pathway
- Judge acid-fast smear quality (thickness, controls, background, reading fields) before trusting a positive or negative report
- Integrate acid-fast morphology and quantity with specimen site and culture/molecular follow-up, without treating stain results as species ID or therapy guidance
