Section: Learning Objectives
Each objective below describes a transfusion-service laboratory competency, investigating and interpreting adverse transfusion reactions, not delivering bedside treatment.
- Explain why febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reaction (FNHTR) is a diagnosis of exclusion, reached only after the hemolysis workup is negative
- Describe the laboratory-relevant component attributes (leukoreduction, storage duration) that provide context for FNHTR risk without establishing a bedside-testable mechanism
- Identify the specific hemolysis workup elements that must be negative before a febrile reaction can be classified as FNHTR, and recognize when a fever-only presentation still requires acute workup
